Dear Friends of the Special Operations Fund:
Since 1992 the Special Operations Fund has been the only charity dedicated exclusively to the families of our nation’s Joint Special Operations Command’s special mission units. This year we are celebrating our 30th anniversary of providing educational and financial assistance to those families whose warrior has been killed in training, combat, or line of duty. These warriors are literally the tip of our nation’s spear and comprise the world’s most elite combat forces. Their units and the missions they conduct are classified.
The longest war in the history of the United States, with its continual deployments, has taken a significant toll on families. While we cannot take the place of the warrior who fails to return, we can and do support their families by providing educational scholarships ranging from preschool tuition to graduate degrees at many of our country’s most prestigious universities. To date we have provided over $18 million in educational grants to families in this small community. Because of the stress of such a long war on the families, we have funded over $6 million in scholarships to families of current and veteran unit members to help ease their burden and show our appreciation of their voluntary contribution to the freedoms we enjoy.
This “quiet fund for quiet warriors” has earned a special trust and bond with the units we serve. The Fund is proud to be one of the first called upon when a family need arises.
Our non-program expenses (overhead) are less than 10% of our annual outlays and are paid entirely by our Board of Directors, resulting in all public donations going directly to the families we serve. This is unique in today’s world of high overhead charities.
We recognize the service, sacrifice and commitment our warriors and families make every day, and this Fund will always be here to support them. When we are educating these children of our country’s most elite, I believe we are making a significant investment in the future of our Nation.
